Welcome to the Master of Science Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Duke University. The department prides itself on the type and quality of students attracted to our research and teaching opportunities.

The goal of our graduate program is to teach the fundamental and advanced engineering subjects relevant to the practice of civil and environmental engineering in a professinal environment.

Why Pursue a Master's Degree?

The American Society of Civil Engineers recomments the MS degree as the entry-level point for practicing engineers and the MS is viewed as an integral part of progress toward professional registration. The engineering MS is already the degree of choice at major European universities. What's more, studies show that the salaries of engineers with the MS degree not only start at higher levels than BS graduates, but that the rate of increase is faster over a typical career. With a masters degree, engineers will be given noticeably more responsibility, more important tasks, more technical tasks. As a result, they move up the corporate ladder more rapidly and display greater self-confidence and more advanced technical skills.

Our Program

We offer a 5-year BSE/MS degree and a traditional 3 semester MS degree program, both of which provide opportunity to gain depth and breadth in preparation for the increasingly interdisciplinary and complex world of modern engineering. Classes can be chosen from a broad range within each track, and electives from outside CEE can be taken. Two 100-level can count as well as independent study.

We emphasize independent thinking and creativity, leadership and teamwork skills, a broad interdisciplinary approach, and the use of the most recent developments in science and engineering. The program allows students to gain a much greater depth of technical knowledge and thus an ideal springboard for later professional advancement.

Students pursuing studies towards the MS degree in the Department of Civil and Environmental engineering are prepared for leadership in enginering practice or research in two areas:

Getting Started

Explore our faculty and our graduate program--and then correspond with faculty members of interest to you and our Director of Graduate Studies. On this Website, we provide guidelines for designing a course of study for the M.S. degree, and information about stipends, residency requirements and admissions requirements. Financial assistance is available to well-qualified students. The tuition for a typical student will be considerably less than undergraduate (annual) tuition. Online applications for graduate study, processed through the Duke Graduate School, are due in early December.
