In addition to the benefit of completing both degrees in five years, you pay only the undergraduate full time tuition rate for the graduate courses you take in your senior year.
Here's how it works:
If you entered Duke with significant AP credits, if you take courses in the summer, or if you plan for a light senior year course load, you can complete all requirements for your Bachelors degree without carrying a full undergraduate course load in your senior spring. If you have space for two or more additional graduate courses in your senior spring schedule, you can apply to Duke's Graduate School in the senior fall. Once accepted, you can take classes toward your MS degree in your senior spring. Up to 15 graduate course units (5 graduate courses) taken as an undergraduate can count towards your MS degree, provided those courses are not needed to meet your undergraduate degree requirements. The Masters degree program requires a total of 30 graduate units (10 graduate courses). If you complete two or more courses toward your MS degree before completing your BSE degree, you can easily complete the remaining graduate
courses in one year beyond your BSE.
To complete both Bachelors and Masters degrees in five years:
- Develop course plans for your senior year and for one graduate year with your academic adviser and obtain Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) approval
- Take the GRE exam in the Senior Fall
- Apply for admission to Duke's Graduate School during senior fall. Apply online here.
